The Beginning
Heavenly Greens began in 2001 when founders Dan Theis and Brian Hagen relocated to California in search of new opportunities as contractors. What they discovered was something entirely unexpected—artificial grass. Coming from Minnesota, where lush lawns meant constant upkeep, the idea of synthetic turf was both surprising and intriguing. Inspired by its potential, they set out to build a business that would redefine the way people think about their outdoor spaces.
A Real Business
By 2002, after much deliberation, they had landed on the name Heavenly Greens—a nod to their mission of creating beautiful, low-maintenance landscapes. In the early days, their focus was on backyard putting greens, promoting their products at local home and garden shows, as well as neighborhood street fairs. Their hands-on approach and commitment to quality quickly gained traction. As demand grew, Dan and Brian were able to leave their previous jobs and dedicate themselves full-time to the business—Dan leading installation operations and Brian heading up sales and customer outreach.
First Major Growth Period
By 2007, Heavenly Greens had experienced rapid growth, expanding to include multiple dedicated installation crews, a fleet of branded company vehicles, and a full office staff to support operations. The sales team had also grown substantially, with over 15 representatives serving customers across the region. It was during this exciting period of expansion that two future leaders—Tim Fullerton and Troy Scott—joined the company as Sales Representatives, bringing fresh energy, customer-first mindsets, and a passion for the product that would shape the next chapter of Heavenly Greens’ journey.
Growth & Expansion
As the company matured, Dan Theis acquired full ownership by buying out his original business partner, Brian Hagen. Recognizing the talent and leadership potential within his team, Dan elevated both Tim Fullerton and Troy Scott to Vice President roles—marking a pivotal shift in the company’s leadership structure. With a shared vision for growth and innovation, the new leadership team expanded Heavenly Greens’ service areas well beyond the Greater Bay Area, reaching into Monterey County, Sonoma County, Sacramento, and San Joaquin County. This strategic growth allowed the company to bring its premium artificial grass solutions to a broader customer base across Northern California.

By this stage, Heavenly Greens had firmly established itself as a leading force in the Northern California artificial turf industry—earning a reputation as one of the most trusted and recognized names in the country. This success opened the door to strategic partnerships with some of the world’s top turf manufacturers. Through these exclusive relationships, Heavenly Greens gained the ability to custom design, specify, and produce proprietary turf products tailored specifically for the unique needs of the Northern California climate and lifestyle. These exclusive offerings have become a hallmark of the brand, setting Heavenly Greens apart with unmatched quality, performance, and regional relevance.
Evolution of Ownership
A new era for Heavenly Greens began in 2018, when longtime team members Tim Fullerton and Troy Scott—both with the company since 2007—officially acquired ownership. Their deep understanding of the business, strong leadership, and commitment to the company’s founding values made the transition seamless. Under their guidance, Heavenly Greens has continued to thrive while staying true to its roots. Though the company has grown significantly, it proudly remains a family-owned and operated business—employing not only relatives, but also longtime team members and valued individuals from the local community.
